Cytochromes c (cyts c) are excellent model systems for the detailed study of factors that influence heme reactivity. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques are being used to understand the effects of heme distortion, axial ligands, and second-sphere interactions on the heme electronic structure. I use a series of mutants of cytochromes from Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa c-551), from Hydrogenobacter thermophilus (Ht c-552) and from Nitrosomonas europaea (Ne c-552) in my work.
